Pregnant women touching her stomach

In the general population, quit-smoking medications can be a great tool for helping people quit. However, more research is needed before we know for sure whether medications to help people quit smoking work well and are safe for pregnant women.

If you’re pregnant (or trying to become pregnant) and have not been successful in quitting with other methods, you might be thinking about quit-smoking medications to help you. Talk to your doctor before using any quit-smoking medications to find out if they are safe for you and your baby. This includes:

  • Over-the-counter medications
  • Prescription medications
  • “Herbal products” from health stores

Not sure what to ask your doctor? Here are some questions to get the conversation started:

  • How do quit-smoking medications work?
  • What kinds of quit-smoking medications are available?
  • How could a quit-smoking medication help me quit?
  • Which quit-smoking medications are OK to use during pregnancy?
  • Are there any risks to me or my baby from using a quit-smoking medication?
  • What kind of quit-smoking medication do you recommend for me?
  • How often would I have to take the medication?
  • What would happen if I took too much or too little?

There are more ways to quit smoking other than using medications or going cold turkey. You have options, even when you’re pregnant.
