Easy Does It: Dealing with Stress

Pregnancy, having a baby, and being a new parent can bring tremendous joy. But it also can be a very stressful time, especially if you are also trying to quit smoking. You might be facing new things that stress you out:

  • Less time for yourself or with your partner

  • Trying to get your baby to sleep or stop crying

  • Feeding and bathing your baby

  • Less sleep

  • More laundry and dirty dishes

  • Visits from family and friends who want to see the baby

  • Finding daycare or babysitters

  • A tighter budget

  • Taking care of more than one child


Smoking might seem like a good way to de-stress or relax. Many women are surprised to learn that even though it seems like smoking relaxes you, it has the opposite effect on your body. Smoking increases your heart rate and blood pressure. And when the cigarette is gone, all those other stressors will still be there.

Stress is one of the reasons many women smoke. Maybe stress is one of your smoking triggers too. Try to find ways to relax that don’t include smoking.
