How to Stay Smokefree After Your Baby is Born

Although many women quit smoking when they become pregnant, approximately 70 percent of women start smoking again after they have their baby. Quitting smoking has a lot of benefits for you and your baby that last longer than the 9 months of your pregnancy. So it’s important to plan for how you will stay smokefree.

Start by asking yourself the following questions:

  • What new stressful things and triggers might you face as a smokefree mom?

  • How could you deal with new things that stress you out or trigger you to smoke?

  • Who can you call on to support you?

  • What support do you need to stay smokefree and who can provide it? 

  • If you do slip, how will you move forward and start again?

  • What will be your motivation for staying smokefree?

You will probably hit some rough spots as your balance your life as a smokefree mom, but you can use the same skills that helped you quit to deal with any new challenges you might face.
