How Being a Smokefree Mom Helps Your Baby

Congratulations on your new bundle of joy! Maybe you quit smoking during your pregnancy, maybe you struggled and weren’t able to stay quit. Either way, being a smokefree mom is still important. That’s because your baby’s main job is to grow. The chemicals in smoke can make it harder to grow like he or she should.

Research shows that when your baby is not exposed to smoke, you can expect him or her to have:

  •  Fewer coughs and chest colds

  • A lower chance of getting bronchitis or pneumonia (serious lung infections)

  • Fewer ear infections (they’re also less likely to need surgery to get eartube for drainage)

  • Fewer asthma and wheezing problems

  • Less problems sleeping

  • A lower risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or “Crib Death”)

Plus, kids who aren’t exposed to secondhand smoke:

  • Miss fewer days of school because of asthma attacks and respiratory illnesses.

  • Are less likely to become smokers as adults.
