A healthy pregnancy begins before you ever become pregnant. Give yourself the best chance for a healthy pregnancy and healthy baby before you start down the road to motherhood. If you smoke, now’s a great time to quit.

Quitting smoking before (or during) pregnancy is one of the most important steps you can take to increase your chances of a healthy pregnancy and healthy lifetime for your baby. If you quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke before you become pregnant, you may:

  • Have an easier time getting pregnant

  • Avoid miscarriage Exit disclaimer (loss of the pregnancy) or an ectopic pregnancy (when the fertilized egg implants outside the womb)

  • Avoid placenta previa (when the placenta covers the cervix) or placental abruption (when the placenta separates too early and your baby loses oxygen)

  • Reduce your chances for a premature birth Exit disclaimer

  • Have a baby with adequate birth weight

  • Reduce the likelihood your baby is born with a cleft lip and/or cleft palate

  • Reduce your baby’s risk of dying from SIDS, often called “crib death”

  • Help your baby’s brain to develop normally before birth and through the early childhood years – important periods for your child’s brain development.

Even if you smoked and had a healthy pregnancy and healthy baby in the past, every pregnancy is different. And quitting smoking at any time during pregnancy―especially early in your pregnancy― can help your baby make a healthy entrance into the world.

Once your baby is here, staying smoke free is just as important for your baby and you. Forever Free for Baby and Me offers pregnant women and new mothers practical tips for remaining smokefree after you’ve quit.
