In the general population, quit smoking medications are effective in helping people quit. However, more research is needed before we can say for sure whether medications to help people quit smoking are safe and effective for pregnant women. But if you’re pregnant (or trying to become pregnant) and have been unsuccessful in quitting with other methods, talk to your doctor before using any quit smoking medications to find out if they are safe for you and your baby.

This includes:

  • Over-the-counter medications

  • Prescription medications

  • “Herbal products” from health stores

Not sure what to ask your doctor? Here are some questions to ask:

  • How do quit-smoking medications work?

  • What quit-smoking medications are recommended during pregnancy?

  • How could a quit-smoking medication make your quit easier?

  • Are there any risks to you or your baby from using a quit smoking medication?

  • What kinds of quit smoking medications are there?

  • What kind of quit smoking medication would he recommend for you?

  • How often would you have to take the quit smoking medication?

  • What happens if you take too much or too little of the quit smoking medication?

  • What else would you have to do other than take the medication to help you quit smoking?

There are more ways to quit smoking than using medication or quitting cold turkey. You have options, even when you are pregnant. Learn more about other available methods.
