Quitting “Cold Turkey” Isn’t Your Only Choice

There are more ways to quit smoking than cold turkey. Boost your chances of quitting and staying quit by trying one of the following proven methods to help you quit:

  • Telephone counseling & support

    Your state has a toll-free telephone quitline. Call 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669) to get one-on-one help quitting, support, and coping strategies and referrals to resources and local cessation programs. Or you can call 1-877-44U-QUIT (1-877-448-7848) to talk to the National Cancer Institute’s trained counselors (in English or Spanish) to get information and help with quitting. The National Network of Tobacco Cessation Quitlines website provides an interactive map that will show you additional resources available in your state.

  • Internet quitting programs

    There are a variety of quitting programs that you can access through a computer. The National Cancer Institute’s Women.smokefree.gov website provides accurate, up-to-date information and professional assistance to help people quit smoking.

  • In-person counseling & support

    Many local clinics and hospitals have counselors you can meet with face to face or support groups to help you quit. Ask your doctor about cessation counseling, or contact your local clinic, hospital, or health department.

  • Classes

    More and more workplaces have help for workers who want to quit. Some offer quit-smoking clinics and support on the job. Others will pay for outside programs for their workers. Ask at work about the choices open to you.

  • Support groups

    Get support from other people. You can try talking with others one on one or in a group. Online support can be good too. If you’re already on Facebook, check out our Women Who Quit Community.

The more support you get, the better. But even a little can help. Every woman is different and needs different things when she quits smoking. Try one or all of these methods—whatever works for you.
