It's Not All About Calories

Losing weight is about balancing calories in (food and drink) with calories out (exercise). Sounds simple, right? But if it were that simple, you and the millions of other women struggling with their weight probably would have figured it out.

Even though calories in/calories out covers the basics, other things in your life can affect your weight loss efforts. If you’re not getting enough sleep or if you’re always stressed, you might notice that it’s harder to lose weight. This happens for a couple of reasons. First, when you’re stressed or not getting enough sleep, it’s harder to be physically active and to make good decisions about the foods you’re eating. Also, your body responds to sleepless nights and increased stress by increasing cortisol levels, which are hormones that can slow metabolism.

It might also help to remember that eating healthy and being physically active are just plain good for you.  Making healthier food choices and being more active will help you feel better; you’ll have more energy, sleep better and feel less overwhelmed by the world.  So, even if you don’t lose the weight as quickly as you would like, you’re making great progress toward taking charge of your health and your life – and not just managing your calories.

Try This!
Being physically active and eating healthier are about more than reaching your weight loss goals. What are some of the other perks of being more active or making changes to your diet for YOU? Whether it’s increased energy, better quality sleep, or fewer aches and pains, sometimes it’s good to remember that it’s not just about losing weight. Make note of the other benefits you get from making these changes —and keep adding to the list!
