How to Manage Emotions Without Cigarettes

Whether you used to reach for a cigarette after a tough day at the office or found comfort in the companionship of a cigarette on a lonely night, you may be used to having cigarettes available as one of the main ways you deal with uncomfortable emotions. 

One of the challenges of being a smokefree woman is learning new skills for experiencing and dealing with emotions while staying smokefree.

Get to know how your body (and mind) responds to your emotions so that you can face them in a healthy way (and without a cigarette). Sometimes acknowledging those trigger situations or feelings can make them seem less overwhelming.

Struggling with how to cope with emotional ups and downs as a smokefree woman?

Try this!

  • Identify the situations or feelings when it is hardest for you to stay smokefree.
  • Imagine what it would be like to experience those emotions without a cigarette or some other distraction.
  • Ask yourself what is most difficult or scary to you about having those feelings?
  • Imagine what might happen if you had to sit with those feelings without the relief you feel from a cigarette or other distraction?
