What Are the Treatments for Depression?

There are many good treatments for depression, and more than 8 out of every 10 people who use them get better. Treatment almost always helps to reduce symptoms and shorten how long the depression lasts.

There are three basic types of treatment for depression.

  1. Talking to a therapist or counselor
    Talking to a therapist or counselor can help you learn how to cope with the things happening in your life, change behaviors that are causing problems, and find solutions.

  2. Taking medications 
    Medications for depression (or antidepressants) can help even out your mood and help you cope with events in your life that are making your mood worse.

  3. Combining therapy and medication 
    Talking to a therapist or counselor and taking medication can help you cope with your moods and find solutions to help you deal with your moods.

Many people benefit from treatment for depression, even if the symptoms are not serious. So you don’t need to have a lot of symptoms of depression before talking to your doctor or a qualified mental health professional about getting treatment. Many people feel shy or embarrassed about talking to a health professional openly and honestly about their feelings, but doing so has been shown to be an important part of getting better. Depression can severely interfere with your life, and seeking treatment is a good investment in yourself.
