Stressed woman

Stress is what we have when life gives us challenges. There are many ways that we may be challenged. Perhaps we have to change the way we live. Perhaps we have to solve a problem. Perhaps we have to get a task done in a short amount of time. Or maybe we have to make a hard choice. When the challenges of life (big or small) stack up, we have stress.

Stress comes in all shapes and sizes in the following ways:

  • Major life events
Major events or changes like serious illness, divorce, death of a family member, menopause, having a baby, and getting married can cause stress. Yes, sometimes even happy events can be stressful.

  • Daily hassles
Hassles are those things like car trouble, rude people, fights with partner, traffic jams, bad weather, home repairs, arranging childcare, housework, loud children that happen on a regular basis. Dealing with many hassles can weigh you down and wear you out as much as one large stressor.

Knowing your stressors is an important step in finding ways to deal with them. To help figure how much stress you are under, what areas of your life are the most stressful, and ways to deal with your stress.
