Pregnant women talking on phone

Here are 5 frequently asked questions pregnant smokers often have when it comes to quitting and support:

  1. How much support will I need to quit smoking?

It’s hard to say how much you will need support. Every woman’s experience with quitting is different, so the amount of support you need will be too.

  2. What can I ask my partner to do to help me quit smoking?

If your partner smokes, ask them to quit with you. If they’re not ready to quit, ask them not to smoke in front of you or leave cigarettes or ashtrays around the house. If your partner doesn’t smoke, ask them to help distract you and help you relax when you’re quitting.

  3. Should my partner and I try to quit smoking at the same time?

If possible, yes. Couples who stop smoking together may be able to help each other remain smokefree. It can be difficult to stop smoking when someone else in your home continues to smoke.

  4. What should I do when other people tell me I shouldn’t smoke because I’m pregnant?

Thank them for their concern and let them know that you’re working on making healthy changes in your life. Remind them that there are many things you do for your health and for a healthy pregnancy, like getting enough rest, eating healthy and regularly, learning how to better deal with stress, getting regular check-ups, and preparing the home for your baby.

  5. Are there programs available to help pregnant smokers quit smoking?

Yes, there are tools and resources available to help pregnant smokers quit. Consult with your family doctor and check out our resources.
